When people think about art or artistry of any kind, most immediately picture the big names we grew up learning about—Mozart, Leonardo da Vinci, or other legendary figures plastered in history books. But in that process, we often forget the underground, low-key artists who thrive quietly in the shadows—those creators who fuel the heartbeat and energy of their communities. These artists push the boundaries of art beyond what’s traditionally celebrated, expanding it in ways that often go unnoticed.
Muralists, graphic artists, street artists—they bring something raw, vibrant, and alive to the world, yet their work is sometimes misunderstood or overlooked because of outdated reputations tied to graffiti and street art.
Well, let me tell you—The Canopy is every artist’s dream studio. It’s a place where you can drop in, hang out, and experience some seriously cool pieces made by local artists and creators of all kinds. Whether you’re there to chill, skate, have a beer, or dive deeper into the stories behind the resident artists, The Canopy has something for everyone.
And you can’t talk about The Canopy without giving major props to Dusty Gilpin and Carlos Barboza—the founders of The Canopy Arts Center. These guys are the real deal. They carry the title of “artist” with every inch of grit, resilience, and heart that the word deserves. Their work and their story have impacted hundreds, if not thousands, of artists in Oklahoma and beyond.
I’ve had the privilege to witness The Canopy’s journey firsthand. Back when it was just a run-down, abandoned service station, Dusty and Carlos were already dreaming big, pulling nails from wood to recycle for the walls of studios they envisioned building. When we first walked into The Canopy in November 2024, we didn’t know anyone—we just said, “What’s up, Dusty?” And there he was, smiling, busy at work, full of infectious energy.
Watching that old building slowly transform into the vibrant, living art space it is today has been nothing short of inspiring. Dusty and Carlos taught me—and everyone involved—the importance of conserving the heart and soul of what the Plaza District means to Oklahoma City. This isn’t about adding another bar or restaurant to the mix. What we need—and what The Canopy provides—is a space for genuine expression, a nest of creativity right in the heart of the Plaza District, an art district that pulses with life.
Being part of their journey—watching nails go into walls, paint cover surfaces, and sweat drip from the hard work—has been both an honor and a privilege. The Canopy brings life and energy to the Plaza District, hosting cool events that pull the community together and create a space where all walks of life can roam freely and creatively.
After months of spending time with the folks at The Canopy, it’s clear this place is more than just a studio—it’s a movement. It’s about pushing boundaries, exploring identity, and building community through art. So if you ever find yourself in town and want to experience a creative hub that’s alive with passion and potential, don’t underestimate the Plaza District. And most definitely don’t forget to stop by The Canopy, say what’s up to the rad artists who call it home, and soak in the vibe.
